Kenyatta University student-athletes celebrated with songs and jubilation after successfully defending the Overall Winner title at the KUSF Women Sports Championship held at Taita Taveta University from 6th to 8th March 2026.
The annual championship, which coincides with the global celebration of International Women's Day on 8th March, brought together 24 universities from across Kenya in a vibrant showcase of women’s sporting excellence. This year marked the 15th edition of the games, held under the theme “Promoting Inclusivity Through Sports.”
Kenyatta University delivered an outstanding performance, securing the highest number of first-place trophies among the 16 sports disciplines contested during the championship. The victory reaffirmed the University’s strong sporting tradition and commitment to nurturing talent beyond the classroom.
Beyond the medals and trophies, the championship provided a platform for student-athletes to develop critical life skills including teamwork, resilience, leadership, and discipline. The competition also fostered meaningful interactions among participants, strengthening bonds across institutions while promoting mental, physical, and emotional well-being through sport.
University officials commended the athletes and their coaches for their dedication, teamwork, and exemplary performance that continues to raise the University’s profile in collegiate sports.
As the celebrations continue, the victory stands as a testament to Kenyatta University’s enduring commitment to holistic education, sporting excellence, and empowering women through sport.

Being hosts to the first matches of KUSA Nairobi province league 2014-2015 held on 20th and 21st September, Kenyatta University teams recorded most wins in different sports disciplines.
Main campus Soccer men team Hardnuts won 2-0 against St. Paul’s University and drew 1-1 against Mount Kenya University, Ruiru campus team, also won 1-0 against USIU and drew 1-1 against KCA.
In volleyball, KU main campus men’s team won 3-1 against MKU and 3-0 against KU Ruiru campus. Women won against MKU3-1, JKUAT 3-1, USIU 3-0 and a narrow loss to Strathmore 2-3 in a hotly contested match.
Hockey men’s team took part in the Kenya Hockey union league and won against Technical university of Kenya 1-0 and University of Nairobi 3-1. Women in the KUSA Nairobi league, drew nil against JKUAT and lost to USIU 0-3
Basketball teams in the Kenya basketball federation league won all their matches, women’s team ‘oryx’ won 45-30 against western delights in kakamega, Pirates, the men’s side won 63-59 against Mennonites and 50-48 against blazers
In Softball, KU men and women teams both lost their opening matches to Ryders and JKUAT respectively

The Coaches Academy run by the Directorate of Sports and Games, Kenyatta University was successfully launched in September, 2014 with the who is who in sports attending. This much awaited professional course in Coaching and Mentoring kicked off on 13th April, 2015 with 20 pioneer students all Kenyans pursuing coaching in Athletics and Football. The course is the first of its kind to be launched in the East African region.
The purpose of the course is to nurture talented coaches and players in the various sports disciplines
The Coaching and Mentoring Course will take four months offered under the Institutional Based Programme (April, August and December) followed by a one month attachment.

Kenyatta University presented a team of 120 students to the Bi annual Games which were held at Uganda Christian University in Mukono, Uganda. The competition kicked off on 17th December, 2014 with 17 sports disciplines on offer for both men and women. Team KU participated in the following sports disciplines during the games: Athletics- men /women, Badminton-men/women, Chess –men/women, Handball-men, Hockey –men, Netball-women, Scrabble-men/women, Table tennis-men/women, Tennis-men/women and Volleyball-women.
At the end of the Games on 21st December, KU emerged position 4 overall out of 47 participating Universities from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda. This was after garnering 12 Gold medals, 18 silver medals and 19 Bronze medals which ensured KU maintained its position as the best University in Kenya.
Prior to the games, KU team was put through a training camp under the stewardship of very qualified coaches who ensured the athletes got enough technical and tactical preparations before the matches.

Kenyatta University sought to maintain its dominance in the fourth edition of the KUSA women championship which was hosted at Africa Nazarene University on 7th and 8th March 2015. KU registered teams in all 17 sports disciplines that were on offer during the championship, notably football, volleyball, netball, hockey, basketball, handball, hockey, badminton, tennis, table tennis, chess, scrabble, karate, tae-kwondo, swimming, athletics and softball.
KU extended their lead at the summit of the women’s games after garnering 19 Gold medals and 14 silver medals. The teams won Gold medals in swimming, athletics, table tennis, handball; Silver medals in volleyball, netball, badminton, Tennis, and softball. The other teams finished as semi finalists. The win brings to tally a record 4 time overall winners of the championship having emerged overall winners in the past three editions.
The annual championship whose mission is to promote women sport in universities in Kenya was themed in line with the annual international women’s day “ make it happen” and attracted 25 universities both public and private.
